Oxford throttles Pearl in Round 1 victory

Friday night the Oxford Chargers quickly turned what started out as a back-and-forth game against Pearl into a 49-14 victory at the Pirates’ Ray Rogers Stadium.Senior quarterback Guy Cameron Billups, who was hampered by a broken finger on his throwing hand in last year’s season-ending loss at Pearl, got plenty of revenge against Pearl on Friday passing for four touchdowns, three of which went to fellow senior Deshaun McNeal for distances of 39, 23 and 28 yards. Billups’ second touchdown came on what started out as a 20-yard pass to Munchie Gipson on the sideline. Pearl QB/CB Devonte Nichols missed trying to swat the pass, and Gipson turned up field for a 71-yard score to put Oxford ahead 21-7 with 10:11 remaining in the second quarter.

Mont Dean and Jarquis Adams also factored into Oxford’s scoring. Mont scored twice on runs of 37 and 8 yards, while Adams’ 24-yard run capped the Chargers’ scoring on the night.

With the win, Oxford will host West Point on Friday in Round 2 of the Class 5A playoffs. (November 13, 2010)
