Oxford High’s two varsity basketball teams had a successful trip to DeSoto County Tuesday as both earned wins in the Horn Lake Tournament. The Lady Chargers beat Southaven 61-58, while the Chargers overcame a 12-point first quarter deficit to post a 69-67 win over Hernando. Lady Chargers coach Shayne Linzy credited the team’s great effort on defense to win the game, as well as a no-quit attitude.In the boys game, Romeo Johnson scored 22 points, while Justin Fondren and Luke Gibbs added 19 and 13 points respectively.
Denard Jones led Hernando with 20 points.
Oxford’ trailed 23-11 at the end of the first and 39-36 at the half before rallying to post the win. The 2-0 Chargers and 2-0 Lady Chargers will return to action Thursday in the Horn Lake Tournament. Oxford’s girls will play Olive Branch, while the Chargers take on Center Hill. (November 10, 2010, Page 9)
