After playing a back and forth first half, the Ole Miss Lady Rebels basketball team was able to turn it around in the second half to claim a 69-60 victory over Sam Houston State University in the championship game of The Inn at Ole Miss Classic.For her game-high 18-point effort, freshman guard Valencia McFarland was named the tournament’s MVP. Teammate Nikki Byrd was also named to the All-Tournament team.
After struggling in Ole Miss’ season-opening win against Jackson State on Friday, senior guard Kayla Melson bounced back to record 15 points and 12 rebounds.
One area that will be a work in progress is Ole Miss’ zone defense. For the second straight game, the Lady Rebels were unable to execute the zone and gave up more than enough open looks from 3-point range.
Ole Miss will return to the hard wood on Nov. 18, hosting Arizona at 7 p.m. (November 13, 2010)
