Lady Devils get first win

Led by 27 points from Ashley Phillips and 18 from C.C. Phillips, the Water Valley Lady Blue Devils were able to earn their first win of the season Tuesday in the Charleston Round Robin Tournament. WVHS defeated Charleston 59-54, while the Blue Devils lost 52-50. Water Valley’s girls led 12-8 at the end of the first quarter, 27-26 at the half and 45-38 at the end of the third.Water Valley’s girls lost its first game of the season, 55-51, to Cleveland in the first game of the same tournament.

C.C. Phillips scored 29 points, while Ashley Phillips added nine points. The Lady Blue Devils led all the way through the third quarter before being outscored 15-6 in the fourth quarter.

The Blue Devils were led by McKendrick Bounds’ 14-point effort in Tuesday’s loss. Bounds also chipped in five rebounds while T.J. Sims and Walt McCullough each scored 10 points. Sims also finished with nine rebounds. WVHS trailed by eight (41-33) at the end of the third quarter but made things interesting late by outscoring Charleston 17-11.

The Blue Devils lost their season opener 51-30 to Cleveland on Monday. Sims led the team with 12 points in the loss.

Both teams will be back in action against Coffeeville Thursday in the tournament, with the girls beginning play against the Lady Pirates at 4 p.m. (November 10, 2010, Page 9)
