Thanks to career highs from Indiana-transfer Nick Williams and senior Zach Graham, the Ole Miss men’s hoops team picked up its second win of the season, topping the Murray State Racers 77-61.Graham led Ole Miss with a career-high 22 points, while Williams chipped in 21 of his own to improve the Rebels to 2-0 on the season.
“I think this is one that at the end of the day we’ll be able to hang our hat on,” Ole Miss head coach Andy Kennedy said of the Rebels’ win over the Racers, who were a NCAA Tournament team a year ago.
Early on, the Racers held a 14-10 lead, but the Rebels were able to string together 11 unanswered points to take a 21-14 lead and never relinquished the lead.
“The pressure bothered them because we were playing with great energy,” Kennedy said of what he attributed the turning point to in the first half.
Ole Miss was next to perfect from the free throw line, making 22 of 23.
Kennedy said the team had the right guys taking the free throws, with Chris Warren, Williams, Graham and Trevor Gaskins taking all 23 — meaning the big guys, Demarco Cox and Reggie Buckner, did not (“And Murphy Holloway is in South Carolina,” Kennedy joked after listing off who was and was not taking free throws).
Ole Miss will return to the hardwood on Saturday, hosting the Dayton Flyers at 6 p.m. (November 17, 2010)
