Water Valley has several big-time players that litter its roster: senior running back/safety Eric Buckley, junior receiver/cornerback Chris Conard and freshman quarterback E.J. Bounds, just to name a few.
On Friday at Nettleton’s Jack Carlisle Field, it was an unlikely recent roster addition, however, that ended up being the hero for the Blue Devils in their 23-20 overtime victory. With the game tied at 20-20, coach Brad Embry sent eighth-grade kicker Alex Robles on to attempt what would end up being a game-winning 25-yard field goal.
Robles, who had converted two of three extra-point attempts earlier in the game, trotted on to the field, sized up the impending field goal and nailed it straight and true.
While Blue Devils skipped off the field with arms held high in jubilation, it was the defense that had to once again come up big to secure the victory.
After the Tigers’ gained four yards on their first three downs of overtime to set up a 21-yard field goal attempt, junior Des Hervey broke around the right side of Nettleton’s protection untouched and blocked the field goal attempt. (October 4, 2010, Page 3B)
