WATER VALLEY — A highly motivated Water Valley Blue Devils team knocked off the Winona Tigers 31-21 at home on Friday at Bobby Clark Field to secure the second seed in Region 2-3A.After heading to the locker room at halftime tied at 21-21, the Blue Devils turned up the pressure on the Chief Brown-led Tigers, scoring 10 unanswered points while also shutting out the dangerous Winona offense.
Water Valley pulled ahead for good with 11:51 remaining in the fourth quarter when eighth-grader Alex Robles banked a 23-yard field goal off the left up-right.
The Blue Devils expanded their lead on their next possession when senior running back Zenty Allen plowed his way into the end zone for a 1-yard score that capped a 67-yard drive.
Winona attempted a 27-yard field goal with just over a minute remaining in the game, but Water Valley’s C.J. Jackson and Des Hervey got through the kick protection and blocked the kick to preserve the win.
Water Valley’s three touchdowns in the first half came via a 36-yard run by Eric Buckley, an 8-yard QB draw by E.J. Bounds and an 8-yard run by Torrey Horton.
With the exception of a 65-yard yard run that tied the game 7-7, Winona’s Brown, an Ole Miss verbal commit, was held in check for most of the game on offense. (October 23, 2010)
