SPORTS EDITOR BLOG — A strong running game and another solid defensive performance keyed the Lafayette Commodores in their one-sided Region 2-4A win over North Panola Friday night.The Commodores defeated the winless Cougars 49-0 thanks to a 229-yard rushing performance turned in by Demarkus Dennis and a defense that limited the Cougars to just 136 total yards on the night. Dennis rushed for three touchdowns a week after totaling four TDs in the Commodores’ 52-0 win over Byhalia. Dennis’ brother, Jamel, also got involved in the running game as he scored on two short TD runs.
LHS led 28-0 at the half and was ahead 35-0 heading into the fourth quarter. The Commodores (7-0 overall, 3-0 in region) then scored their final two TDs of the night within 16 seconds of each other in the fourth quarter. The first came on a 5-yard run by Jamel Dennis, while DeAndre Fondren scored on a 1-yard run with 10:29 left in the game two plays after the LHS defense recovered a fumble by North Panola.
LHS will be back in action next Friday at home against Senatobia. (October 2, 2010)
