Late surge lifts Oxford past Tigers

The Oxford Chargers scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns and held on to defeat Hernando 31-19 in their regional showdown at Bobby Holcomb Field.

With several starters sidelined with injuries, the Chargers got big nights
offensively from wideout Deshaun McNeal (nine catches, 175 yards, one
touchdown), running back Mont Dean (20 carries, 100 yards, three TDs) and
quarterback Guy Cameron Billups (13-for-22, 230 yards, one TD pass). Demarius
Pegues
came up with several key stops on defense for OHS, while Tre Carothers
interception stopped what could have been a go-ahead scoring drive by the
visitors.

“We needed to win and we needed to win by 12 (points). We did that,” OHS coach
Johnny Hill said after his team improved to 5-3 overall and evened its Region
1-5A mark at 2-2. “We made some big stops when we had to against a good Hernando
team with a good game plan, and we came up with some big runs and catches.”

Hernando was paced by fullback Eli Canton, who finished with 124 yards rushing
on 17 carries and added a 17-yard TD catch from quarterback Kedric Merriweather(October 16, 2010)
