Early momentum carries WVHS to victory

The Water Valley Blue Devils (7-2, 2-1) captured a huge divisional win over the Cougars of South Pontotoc (4-5, 2-1) Friday night 38-14. The win ties the Blue Devils for second place in Region 2-3A with the Tigers of Winona. The game changing play came with 1:16 left in the first quarter. Blue Devil wide receiver Des Hervey fielded a punt on the Water Valley 29-yard line. He found a seam and burst past Cougar defenders. Hervey returned the punt 71 yards for a touchdown.

Not learning from their prior mistake, the Cougars punted yet again to Hervey. Hervey took the ball at the 10-yard line, started left then jetted to the right side of the field. Three Cougar defenders chased after Hervey only to get creamed by Blue Devil blockers. Hervey was finally brought to the ground at the Cougar 33-yard line. Hervey finished the night with two punt returns for 128 yards.

Special teams along with a very strong Wrecking Crew defense helped improve the Blue Devils to 4-0 on the season at home.

The Blue Devils will try and keep their home winning streak alive when the Winona Tigers travel to Water Valley next Friday.  Game time is set for 7:00 p.m (October 16, 2010)
