SPORTS EDITOR BLOG — A late interception by DeShaun McNeal and some key plays made by several unsung players helped lift the Oxford Chargers past Lake Cormorant Friday night.The Chargers defeated the Gators 26-19 in the Region 2-4A battle that was nip-and-tuck throughout. Oxford broke a 19-19 tie with 2:02 left in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run from Mont Dean. OHS, which improved to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the region, then held off the Gators on their final drive with McNeal’s interception in the corner of the end zone with 1:07 left in the game.
Oxford’s defense forced Lake Cormorant into four turnovers in the second half, including three in the fourth quarter on the Gators’ last three drives of the game.
OHS quarterback Guy Cameron Billups overcame a sluggish start to finish the game 11-for-22 for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Billups completed both of his touchdown passes to McNeal, who finished the game with five catches for 59 yards. Dean added 11 yards on the ground for the Chargers, as well as two touchdowns. Oxford finished with 235 yards on the ground compared to just 81 yards for the Gators. (October 23, 2010)
