Water Valley storms J.Z. George

WATER VALLEY— The Blue Devils lopsided 41-14 victory over the J.Z. George Jaguars at Bobby Clark Field on Friday will be a Homecoming night few fans will forget.

The Wrecking Crew defense proved once again to be elite while the Blue Devils offense left many fans excited about the remainder of the season. The Blue Devils run game helped elevate the play of the entire offense.  The running game combined for a 297 yards on the ground. Running back Torrey Horton ran rampant with 128 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 12 carries. Eric Buckley continued to show why he is a dangerous treat with the ball in his hands, running the ball seven times for 46 yards and one touchdown. Including Horton and Buckley, 11 Blue Devil players carried the ball on this victorious Homecoming night.

In the air, E. J. Bounds passed for 79 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Kenon Kirkwood and C.J. Jackson were on the receiving end of the two touchdown passes.

Not every minute of the Blue Devils win was picture perfect. With 1:49 left in the first quarter, the Blue Devils led 14-0 when the Jaguars’ Louis Hemphill took a hand off and jetted 51 yards into the end zone.

Coach Brad Embry took a deep breath, and started clapping his hands. Embry’s positive attitude seemed to put a spell of enthusiasm on the team and fans alike. The stunned looks of so many became yells of encouragement and pleading for the team to get back to work.

The Blue Devils grabbed their hard hats and did just that. Not allowing the Jaguars to score again until 33 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

WVHS will look  to continue its winning traditions when the Vikings of North Pontotoc travel to Water Valley for a scheduled 7:30 p.m. kickoff. (September 11, 2010)
