Vanderbilt Game Day Blog

Hello from sunny Oxford, where the 1-1 Ole Miss Rebels are set to face the 0-2 Vanderbilt Commodores.

Ole Miss enters today’s game fresh off of s 27-13 victory over Tulane in New Orleans, while the Commodores come to Oxford with having lost to No. 15 LSU 27-3.Ole Miss leads the all-time series 47-35-2 and defeated the ‘Dores 23-7 in Nashville last year.

LEADING ‘DORES: Leading Vanderbilt on offense is quarterback Larry Smith under center and running back duo Warren Norman and Zac Stacy.

Smith has completed 27 of 48 passes on the young season for 310 yards and one score (with one interception).

Norman leads Vanderbilt with 114 yards rushing and one score on 18 attempts, while Stacy has 88 yards and one score on 18 attempts as well.

HOW THE GAME WAS WON:
7-0 Vanderbilt: Stacy scores on a 35-yard run up the middle, running through several arm tackle attempts with 7:14 remaining in the first half. The score capped a 96-yard drive.
14-0 Vanderbilt: Ole Miss QB Jeremiah Masoli is picked off by Eddie Foster attempting to complete a pass to Markeith Summers along the Commodores sideline. Foster returns ball 21 yards for score with 3:36 remaining in first half.
14-7 Vanderbilt: With 1:20 remaining in the first half Ole Miss got on the scoreboard courtesy of a 4-yard TD run from Korvic Neat. The score was set up by a 31-yard pass down the sideline from Masoli to Jesse Grandy. The touchdown was Neat’s first as a Rebel.
14-14 OleMiss-Vanderbilt: Masoli ties the game on Ole Miss’ first possession of the second half, weaving his way through Vanderbilt’s defense to the tune of a 28-yard TD run with 8:34 remaining in the third quarter. The play went under review, but stood as originally called.
21-14 Vanderbilt: Norman didn’t waste any time putting Vanderbilt back ahead. On the ‘Dores first play of the following drive, Norman broke through the middle of Ole Miss’ defense and raced 80 yards for the score with 8:22 remaining in the third quarter.
28-14 Vanderbilt: Neat fumbles on Ole Miss’ 15-yard line and Vanderbilt cashes in. Smith scores on 15-yard run with 8:04 left in the game.

GAME STATS:

  • The stat of the game was turnovers, where the Rebels turned the ball over three times, two of which led directly to points. The first was the pick-six Masoli threw. The second was Neat’s fumble on Ole Miss’ 15-yard line, which led to Smith’s touchdown run to go ahead 28-14.
  • Norman had a game-high 111 yards rushing, while Masoli led Ole Miss with 104 yards on the ground.
  • Masoli completed 19 of 35 passes for 190 yards. He threw no touchdowns.
  • With the loss, Ole Miss falls to 1-2 on the year, while Vanderbilt improves to 1-2. The win is  Robbie Caldwell’s first as a head coach. He was awarded the game ball by his players.
