NEW HOPE — Last night’s 38027 loss at New Hope was a hard one to swallow if you’re a Chargers fan.Even with three lost fumbles in the first half, Oxford only trailed the Trojans 25-13 at halftime.
With 1:13 remaining in the second quarter, Oxford looked poised to take the lead, set up on New Hope’s 2-yard line.
On Mont Dean’s rush around the left side of the line, however, a Trojans defender popped the ball free and sophomore Q. Newby returned it 98 yards to put New Hope ahead 18-7.
After QB Guy Cameron Billups connected with receiver Stan Ivy for a 44-yard touchdown strike five plays later (but missed the ensuing 2-point conversion after a flag had pushed Oxford back), New Hope’s Terrance Dentry broke free for a 52-yard score with 3.8 seconds remaining.
Trailing 32-27, Oxford’s Xavier Pegues stripped NHHS QB Zac Thrasher of the ball and teammate D.J. Blake recovered the loose ball on the Trojans’ 33 with 8:40 remaining.
The Chargers were unable to capitalize on the great starting field position, and would eventually turn the ball over on downs. Twice more Oxford (3-2 overall, 0-1 Region 1) would get the ball, but the Chargers never crossed back over into the Trojans’ territory the rest of the game. (September 25, 2010)
