Pancake Breakfast fundraiser
The Oxford Lions Club will host an All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Oct. 9 at the Applebee’s Restaurant in Oxford. Tickets are $5 each or two for $10. Proceeds will help the club in its fight to prevent blindness and make a difference to everyone in the community. Advance tickets only. RSVP by Oct. 6. Red Cross Community Class
The American Red Cross will offer an adult, child and infant CPR/AED/First Aid community class from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 23. The cost of the class is $50. All classes are held at the Red Cross Office, 106 Skyline Drive. Interested participants should contact the Red Cross office at 662-236-1282 to register. Pre-registration is required for the class. Delay Cemetery Fish Fry Fundraiser
A fish fry fundraiser will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 9 at Delay Baptist Church. Fish and chicken plates will be available and will include hushpuppies, slaw, desserts and drinks. Carry-outs welcome. Donations will also be appreciated. Proceeds will benefit the Delay Cemetery Fund. (September 28, 2010)
C.A.R.E. Support Group Luncheon
The Caring for Aging Relatives Effectively (C.A.R.E.) support and exchange group meets for lunch at noon on the last Wednesday of the month at Azalea Gardens Assisted Living Community. This is an informal gathering that provides those in caring situations an opportunity to exchange ideas, resources and concerns with others. A light lunch is provided compliments of Azalea Gardens, 100 Azalea Drive. Jobless rate drops by 30 percent in August
Lafayette County’s unemployment rate fell steeply from July to August, dropping from 9.8 percent to 6.9 percent — a nearly 30 percent decline in the number of unemployed people in the local workforce. (September 27, 2010, Page 5A)
Japanese Film Series
The Japan Foundation and the Croft Institute for International Studies will host the sixth annual “Japan Foundation Film Series: Japanese Films of the 1960s.” The second film, “The Fort of Death,” will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Oxford Malco Studio Cinema. City OKs Foster to head tech school
During its regular meeting Friday, the Oxford School Board approved a motion to have Lafayette County School District Superintendent Mike Foster head up the Oxford-Lafayette School of Applied Technology.
The city and county school districts will split the cost of Foster’s $10,000-a-year raise. (September 27, 2010, Page 1)
Whirlpool cleans up Oxford site
Whirlpool is working with the Mississippi Department of Environment Quality to clean up its former Oxford location.
To make sure the property is safe as well as marketable, Whirlpool has entered into an agreement with MDEQ to participate in its Brownfields Voluntary Cleanup and Redevelopment Act to clean up an area in the defunct plant that showed the presence of hydraulic fluid, which has contaminated a 500-foot square foot area. UM Manufacturing Center receives grant
The University of Mississippi’s Center of Manufacturing Excellence received a grant recently from the Mississippi Development Authority for $529,395. UM will use this grant money for solar panels for the new center which is currently being built. (September 27, 2010, Page 1A)
