LHS students lift voices to raise funds for choir program

- Bettye Jane Davis — 77, died Monday, Sept. 27, 2010. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Coleman Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories at the funeral home. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 this evening at the funeral home.
Nutt ready to lead Rebels back into SEC play
A re-engergized Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt seemed ready to lead his team back into Southeastern Conference play two days after the Rebels recorded their most impressive win of the season.
Nutt talked about moving forward with several young players, specifically on defense at the end spot, with the loss of senior leader Kentrell Lockett, who will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL. (September 28, 2010, Page 6)
‘Dores’ Dennis runs into POW honors
The catalyst for Lafayette’s 52-0 romp over Byhalia on Friday was running back Demarkus Dennis.
The junior rushed for 187 yards and four scores in Lafayette’s Region 2-4A showdown. As a result, Dennis was named the EAGLE’s Player of the Week for the first time this season. (September 28, 2010, Page 6)
Fikes scoring spree lifts U-10 Crew
Alex Fikes scored five goals to lead the Crew to an 8-5 win over the Wizards in the Under 10 Boys League Monday night.
In the other U-10 game, the Fire beat the Galaxy 5-2.
In two U-12 boys league games, the Tornados edged the Sounders 3-2, while the Earthquakes pounded the Wizards 5-1.
In two U-10 girls league games, the Earthquakes blanked the Galaxy 5-0, while the Crew doubled up the Fire 4-2. In two U-12 girls league games, the Galaxy blanked the Sounders 3-2, while the Crew edged the Tornados 3-2. (September 28, 2010, Page 7)
School not the only place for teaching, learning
President Barack Obama spoke about education earlier this week, suggesting holding teachers and students accountable and considering a longer school year. Those things, plus money, may help Johnny learn to read better, but probably not any more than things his parents, siblings and relatives could do at home. Sardis Lake Clean-up Day
Sardis Lake will host the 2010 Clean Up Day on Oct. 9. Clean Up Day is done in conjunction with National Public Lands Day and is meant to inspire people to invest in our public lands by volunteering. At Sardis Lake, Clean Up Day participants will help to keep the lake clean by picking up litter in recreation areas and along the shoreline.
