After trading touchdowns early, the Oxford’s eighth-grade football team was able to string together 13-straight points to defeat Grenada 22-8 on the road.

LHS downs Byhalia, stamps ticket for playoffs
The Lafayette Lady Commodores volleyball team defeated Byhalia on Tuesday 3-0 (25-10, 25-7, 25-12). With the win, Lafayette secured its spot in the playoffs and will travel to Caledonia on Saturday. The match is set for 3 p.m. (September 29, 2010, Page 9)

Yocona Harvest Festival
Everyone is invited to attend the annual Yocona Harvest Festival that will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 30 in the Yocona Community Center. The festival will feature games, prizes, concessions, door prizes and a cake walk. Chances to be sold on a handmade quilt donated by the Yocona Homemakers. Door prizes to be given away every 30 minutes. A costume contest will be held at 7 and an auction will be held at 8:30. Foster parent guilty of abusing foster child
A Lafayette County jury took four hours to deliver a guilty verdict against a former Oxford man, charged with molesting his 16-year-old foster child.
David Campbell, 46, was originally charged with fondling by a person in a position of trust or authority and sexual battery by a person in a position of trust or authority. The jury acquitted Campbell on the sexual battery, but found him guilty on the fondling charge. (September 28, 2010, Page 1)
Future of bowling alley unknown
When The Lanes bowling alley burned down last week, more than just bowling shoes and pins were destroyed.
“There was so much memorabilia up in that attic,” owner Gary Churchill said Monday about Oxford’s nearly 50-year-old bowling alley. “It’s just heart breaking”
Churchill owned the business, but rented the space from Robert and Kay Churchill, his aunt and uncle, who owned the building that housed the bowling alley and the Brass Monkey, which was owned separately by Chris Phillips and Ricky Bowles. (September 28, 2010, Page 1)
