Wrecking Crew shuts out Coffeeville

SPORTS EDITOR BLOG — Water Valley’s standout defense was on display Friday night in the team’s 28-0 win over Yalobusha County rival Coffeeville. The Blue Devils captured the Railroad Trophy by holding the Pirates to just 40 yards and one first down in the first half  and 58 yards total. Senior linebacker J.D. Fondon led the Wrecking Crew’s effort with 17 tackles, with seven going for a loss, one forced fumble and a partially blocked punt. C.J. Jackson also blocked a punt for the Blue Devils, who dominated the game from the start.

Freshman quarterback E.J. Bounds continued to progress at his time under center as he ran for two touchdowns and threw for another. Bounds’ scored the only points the Blue Devils needed on the night when he scored on a 5-yard TD run at the 7:54 mark of the first quarter. 

Torrey Horton scored the Blue Devils’ second TD on a 3-yard run early in the second quarter, while Bounds’ capped a successful first half on the scoreboard with a 1-yard run with 2:43 left to play before the end of the first half. Bounds’ TD pass came on the Blue Devils’ first possession of the third quarter. His throw covered 22 yards to Chris Conard and capped a 10-play, 62-yard drive.

WVHS will be back in action Friday at Calhoun City. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. (August 28, 2010)
