Former Rebel in serious condition

An altercation at the Exchange Apartment complex early Saturday morning has left former Ole Miss baseball player Taylor Hashman in serious physical condition Sunday.

Hashman is currently in the intensive care unit at The Med in Memphis. He underwent surgery to his head Saturday, according to a source, and was showing signs of improvement today. Hashman is in the hospital today after that early morning incident at his apartment complex.

According to information released by the Oxford Police Department, officers were dispatched to the Exchange at 2:05 Saturday morning to deal with an unresponsive male. That male turned out to be Hashman, who was apparently struck once in the face area by a person he knew after a verbal disagreement. Hashman fell immediately to the ground, striking his head and going unconscious, according to witnesses.

The case remains under investigation and at this point, no other information will be released about the case. Charges for the suspect who struck Hashman will be determined by the investigators working the case as well as the district attorney’s office, according to police.

Ole Miss athletics officials would not comment any further on the case, but a statement was issued through Kyle Campbell of the sports information department Sunday afternoon.

“Obviously we are deeply concerned about Taylor’s well-being, and our thoughts and prayers are with he and his family during this difficult time. We are also still gathering information on what happened,” Campbell said.

Ole Miss Athletics Director Pete Boone was reached by phone later in the evening Sunday. He said he was glad to hear that Hashman was recovering in a positive fashion and that he would continue to pray for Hashman and his family. (August 1, 2010, Page 7)
