Green Bag Lunch and Lecture Series
Jim Morrison, director of Campus Sustainability at the University of Mississippi, kicks off this series for the fall with “Service and Sustainability in the Lafayette County/Oxford/University Community” to share ideas on how sustainability involves respecting and helping people as much as it does the environment. The Green Bag Lunch is co-sponsored by the Center for the Study of Southern Culture and the Office of Campus Sustainability. The lecture will be held at noon Wednesday in the Barnard Observatory lecture hall. (August 30, 2010)

Free smoke detectors available
The use of smoke detectors is the no. 1 line of defense against being killed in a house fire. To make sure everyone in Oxford and Lafayette County is protected, the Layfayette County Volunteer Fire Department and Oxford Fire Department are offering smoke detectors to those who qualify thanks of the Mississippi State Fire Marshal’s free smoke alarm program. Oxford cages O’Bannon, CHS Tigers
The Oxford Chargers’ 24-14 win over Charleston on Friday accomplished more than just revenge.
The win exorcised demons that had been with the Chargers for over a year.
Prior to the game at Bobby Holcomb Field, it was obvious the players were focused on gaining atonement from last year’s 31-13 loss and it showed on the field. (August 30, 2010, Page 1B)
Commodores score early, often in Friday rout
The Lafayette Commodores scored early, often and in a variety of ways Friday night as they posted a 35-16 victory over Memphis Trezevant in their 2010 home opener at William L. Buford Stadium.
Lafayette, now 2-0 heading into its annual Crosstown Classic showdown with Oxford, scored on its second play from scrimmage and on its last play of the first half (that capped an 11-play, 91-yard drive) in building a 35-0 lead that allowed coach Anthony Hart to sit many of his starters in the second half and work on building depth. Blue Devils’ defense pounds Pirates in win
The sweat that rolled down the face of Water Valley senior linebacker J.D. Fondon following Friday night’s 28-0 win over Coffeeville was like a refreshing rain in the midst of drought.
A year after giving up 34 points in a home loss to the Pirates, Fondon wanted to make sure that the Blue Devils got some revenge on their Yalobusha County rival to the south. Leading the Wrecking Crew defense, Fondon and company battered and bruised the Pirates all night when they had the ball. (August 30, 2010, Page 1B)
No Joke: Phillips takes over at UK
It was just a week ago that first-year Kentucky coach Joker Phillips had to make the toughest decision of his short tenure. After evaluating two scrimmages and countless hours of practice the first two weeks, Phillips decided that senior Mike Hartline would be the starting quarterback when the Wildcats take on Louisville in the season opener.
Hartline has the most overall experience at the spot, but sophomore Morgan Newton, the player that pushed Hartline the most during practices, was 5-3 as a starter last year when Hartline went down with an injury. In the end, Phillips likes his depth at the quarterback spot, one of the strength areas on the team. (August 30, 2010, Page 3B)
