Last season Oxford fell flat at Charleston, losing to the Class 3A school 31-13. Tonight, the Chargers were came out motivated to right last season’s loss and defeated the Tigers 24-14 at Bobby Holcomb Field.Oxford running back Mont Dean got the Chargers on the scoreboard with a 5-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
Charleston quickly responded with a 70-yard touchdown throw from Antwan Wilson to Kameron Myers to tie the game 7-7.
The Chargers opened the second quarter with another score. This time, senior quarterback Guy Cameron Billups connected with Deshaun McNeal over the middle for a 12-yard touchdown to put Oxford ahead 14-7.
After Charleston’s Wilson tied the game at 14-14 on a 1-yard run at the 2:25 mark of the second quarter, the Chargers were able to pull ahead.
As time expired in the first half kicker Ian Rone converted a 23-yard field goal to put Oxford ahead 17-14. The Chargers would not relinquish the lead.
With 4:29 remaining in the third quarter Oxford scored the final points of the game when Billups connected with receiver Stan Ivy for an 81-yard touchdown strike. Rone’s extra point capped the night’s scoring.
