SPORTS EDITOR BLOG — Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt held his first game week press conference of the season earlier this afternoon. With former Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli’s status still not clear, Nutt said that he was moving forward with Nathan Stanley and Randall Mackey as the two QBs who will see the most action in practice this week.
“It’s been a little more difficult when you’re using all of them. The good thing about it is you’re thinking Nathan Stanley and Randall Mackey. Both of those guys, you’re not afraid to put them in the game. Nathan has gotten better. Jeremiah has raised everybody’s level. There is nothing like competition. It makes everybody better,” Nutt said. “The thing that gets you the most excited is a guy like Randall that can really throw the ball. You see it on film a lot of times but when you put him here in certain situations, third and eight going up against a very good defense, he’s thrown the ball extremely well. I’m excited. I’m glad we have these three guys. I hope Jeremiah’s deal works out and we’ll go from there. Right now you have to prepare for Nathan Stanley, Randall Mackey (taking snaps).”
Nutt was still confident that he would hear back from the NCAA about Masoli’s playing status this week.
“I don’t know when, but I’m expecting either today, (Tuesday) or the next day at the latest.”
