Local players show support for expansion

Tennis players of all ages flooded the steps of the Lafayette County Chancery Building Wednesday afternoon in the form of a peaceful rally to help raise awareness regarding the possibility of expanding the John Leslie Tennis Courts.

The project, which has already been approved by the city, would expand the current facility from eight to 21 courts. The renovation would also include the addition of a pavilion, practice courts, a championship court, new bathroom facilities, additional parking and possibly a pro shop, making it the largest public facility in the state.

While the city has already signed off on the expansion, it’s now the county’s supervisors which must vote to approve the expansion on Sept. 7.

Led by new Lafayette High coach Debbie Swindoll and Oxford coach Louis Nash, the players were armed with signs saying things such as “we need more courts,” “Got Tennis?” and “kids love to play tennis.” (August 26, 2010, Page 6)
