Senior quarterback Guy Cameron Billups was 6-for-10 for 148 yards and three touchdowns — all in the first quarter — in leading the Oxford Chargers to a 41-12 victory over Grenada in the season-opener for both teams at Bobby Holcomb field.Billups threw TD passes over man-to-man coverage to Deshaun McNeal (9 yards), Robert Liggins (75 ) and Stan Ivy (7) in sparking OHS to a 28-0 lead in the opening period. The Chargers led 35-0 at halftime and added a third-quarter score after the visitors converted a pair of turnovers into touchdowns.
The Oxford defense limited Grenada to just two first downs and 37 total yards in the opening two periods before giving way to reserves most of the rest of the way. Four different players saw action at quarterback for OHS as coach Johnny Hill and his staff got a chance to see a lot of folks.
“It was a good win,” Hill said. “We thought we needed to see some other folks play and we saw some good things and some things we need to work on.”
“We worked on our timing all summer and we had it at the start tonight,” said Billups, who finished the game 10-for-19 for 213 yards. “It was a team effort on offense — the line, the receivers, everyone. It was a great way to start things.” (August 20, 2010)
