Chargers’ Billups earns Player of the Week honor

Oxford senior quarterback Guy Cameron Billups completed 13 of 22 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Chargers to their victory over Charleston. The effort, which sparked a team effort by OHS, earned Billups Player of the Week honors. Honorable mentions include Tre Carothers and DeShaun McNeal of Oxford, Jeremy Liggins and Demarkus Dennis of Lafayette and J.D. Fondon and Torrey Horton of Water Valley. (August 31, 2010, Page 6)

  • Pam Clearman — 45,  died Monday, Aug. 30, 2010, at Grenada Lake Medical Center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at Cambridge United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Cambridge Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 until 8 p.m. at Waller Funeral Home.
  • Suzanne Elliott Fowler — 42, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W. E. Pegues Funeral Home in Tupelo. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 – 8 this evening at the funeral home.
  • Kimberly Karol “Kim” Morrow Herrin — 43, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel of Waller Funeral Home in Oxford. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Increasing ways to communicate, increases ways to harass

Before cell phones, someone “crank calling” or “stalking” someone by calling their home phone over and over could get away with their identify easier before the invention of things like caller ID, phone tracking and voice mail and texting where the proof of the harassment is often recorded.

The OPD has investigated 117 reports of harassing phone calls in the last year. (August 31, 2010, Page 1)

Retirement day for Col. Reb

Colonel Reb is soon to be a remnant of the past as he goes into the vault tomorrow. Today is the last official day his image can be licensed. The College Licensing Company, the agent for the University of Mississippi licensing issues, released a memo in March to all licensees that the image of the Colonel may only be licensed through August 31. Tomorrow he enters the College Vault Program where the image can only be licensed out for special occasions for historical use. (August 31, 2010, Page 1)

Public hearing set for Thursday on Sunday alcohol sales issue

A public hearing on Sunday alcohol sales is set for Thursday but with a location change.
The hearing has moved from City hall to the Oxford Conference Center at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
