Update on Ole Miss’ Derek Horne

SPORTS EDITOR BLOG — Impressive. That one word is the best one to describe how well Ole Miss senior associate athletic director Derek Horne performed in his recent interview with Florida A&M for the school’s vacant athletics director position.According to sources in Tallahassee, Fla., that are close to the hiring, Horne wowed FAMU president Dr. James Ammons and others in his interview that was held at the school on Thursday. Horne is one of two finalists to fill the position that has been open since December and right now believed to be the leading candidate due to his interview and his experience at an SEC school.

It’s unknown if or when Ammons would extend an offer to Horne but he would like to fill the spot as soon as possible. A tentative deadline by the start of the football season has been talked about in discussions with candidates according to a source.

Horne, who is a native of Quitman, Ga., came to Oxford and Ole Miss in 1983 as a member of the Rebel basketball team. After completing his degree, he started his career in the business world at KLLM Transport Services before being hired by current Ole Miss Athletics Director Pete Boone in 1995. (July 10, 2010)
