Nutt: No problem with Cotton

SPORTS EDITOR BLOG — Reports that Ole Miss freshman quarterback Raymond Cotton was possibly looking to transfer from the team have come up to be false. The possibility of Cotton leaving Ole Miss was fueled by information that confirmed Cotton’s father was in Oxford to talk about his son’s playing status/role with the team. But according to Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt, he said Cotton was just dealing with ‘freshmanitis’ and as far as he knew, was planning to remain on the team.

Cotton, a native of Fort Meade, Md., redshirted this past season, but was expected to compete to become Ole Miss’ starting quarterback alongside sophomore Nathan Stanley and junior college transfer Randall Mackey. Cotton played well in the annual Grove Bowl this past spring, throwing for 178 yards and two touchdowns. Cotton is learning how to play with a torn labrum, but Nutt still thought he could contribute to the offense despite the injury. (July 22, 2010)
