SPORTS EDITOR BLOG — Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen was asked just a few minutes ago at SEC Media Days why he refers to Ole Miss as the school up North. After joking that the reason revolved around the fact that Ole Miss was just a few hours to the north of Starkville, Mullen said the real reason for doing it helped emphasize to his players of how important the rivalry is between the Rebels and the Bulldogs.
“It’s to enhance our rivalry a little bit and make sure our players know the importance of that game. It means a whole lot to the people in the state of Mississippi,” Mullen said. “I can promise you this, I had a lot of thanks from the people in the state of Mississippi for winning that game (in 2009). The pride they can take with them for the next 12 months is a tremendous thing. It’s a very important thing to stress to our players how important that game is to the Mississippi State fan base.” (July 21, 2010)
