Former Ole Miss player named FAMU AD

SPORTS EDITOR BLOGDerek Horne, a former Ole Miss basketball player and current Ole Miss Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs, has agreed to become the new athletics director at Florida A&M.Horne agreed in principal to become the school’s AD on Tuesday, but was waiting on FAMU president James Ammons to make the announcement and recommendation to the board of trustees for final approval. Ammons confirmed the hiring through the Tallahassee Democrat late Friday night.

“I think Derek has a wide-range of experiences at the University of Mississippi and in the SEC, a conference that is a football powerhouse,” Ammons told Democrat reporter St. Clarie Murraine.

Horne will reportedly receive a three-year contract and be paid $200,000 annually. Horne, a native of Quitman, Ga., graduated from Ole Miss in 1987 after a four-year basketball career.

Horne was hired by current Ole Miss Athletics Director Pete Boone in 1995 and has been most recently involved in the athletic department’s correspondence and development with former letterwinners in all sports. He also oversees the CHAMPS Life Skills program and concessions at all athletics venues.
