During our chat, Russo displayed the new Water Valley football T-shirt, which will be sold at the upcoming Watermelon Carnival (Aug. 5-7) as well as at football games. The shirts, entitled “Times change… Blue Devils Pride Remains,” depict all of the Blue Devils’ helmets from over the years (including the 1990 helmet with the black visor, which Russo explained is the very helmet assistant coach Bryant Mix wore during his days on the WVHS gridiron).

READY TO GET GOING: The Blue Devils will kick their season off on Aug. 13 with a “Meet the Blue Devils” scrimmage against Vardaman. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. Water Valley’s regular season will begin the following weekend with a home meeting against Bruce.
PLAY CLOCK: During Monday’s regularly scheduled school board meeting, Embry made an appearance to ask for permission to move the fence on the home side of the field back several feet — to give the players more space on the sideline —and also to fix up the press box on the home side a bit. Both improvements will be funded by the booster club, and Embry was basically just seeking permission. Embry also mentioned to the board that the team is looking to install two 25-second play clocks, one behind each end zone. The booster club has the money to purchase one (approximately $2,500), but is still looking for funding to purchase the second. If you would like to donate to the cause or buy advertising below the playclock(s), contact Embry at (662) 473-2115. (July 19, 2010)
