Tornado touches down in Abbeville; 1 dead

A tornado touched down in Abbeville early this morning, killing one woman, downing trees and causing structural damage in the area, according to local officials.

Phyllis Ann Sabbatini, a 45-year-old woman, was reportedly killed when the storm hit around 3:30 this morning, according to witnesses on the scene.

An unoccupied house trailer was also destroyed during the severe weather that moved through the northern part of the county this morning.

A tree also fell on a storage shed behind the home of an Abbeville resident. The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department and other county employees were working to clear the roads from the debris. North East Mississippi Electric Power Association  employees were out in the area rehooking up power and checking for downed power lines.

Flooding has been reported all over the city of Oxford including in Notting Hill, Sisk Avenue and South 18th Street, according to emergency management officials.”It’s such a volume of water,” Oxford Emergency Management Coordinator Jimmy Allgood said this morning.

More rain is expected through the day with the area under a Flash Flood Watch until 7 p.m. this evening and a tornado watch in effect until noon, according to the National Weather Service. The rest of the day should bring showers and some severe thunderstorms with highs in the upper 70s. Rain chances diminish after midnight.

More information will be posted as it becomes available and complete details of this weekend’s severe weather will be reported in Monday’s edition of The Oxford EAGLE. (May 2, 2010)
