TUSCALOOSA —It wasn’t the prettiest win, but the Rebels’ five runs in the first three innings were just enough to overcome seven walks by starter Drew Pomeranz and two errors by second baseman Alex Yarbrough as No. 15 Ole Miss was able to hold on to a 5-4 victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.The Rebels their bats going early on Friday, taking a 2-0 lead in the first thanks to a run-scoring double from Tim Ferguson and a sacrifice fly by Zach Miller.

Following a scoreless second inning, Ole Miss’ offense went back to work in the third, scoring two runs on a homer from Ferguson and another run on a sac fly by Miles Hamblin.

Ole Miss starter Drew Pomeranz proved to be — some could say — effectively wild in his 5.0 innings of work.

Although he walked in a run in the fourth, the junior left-hander actually took a no hitter into the fifth before Alabama second baseman Ross Wilson broke it up, hitting the first pitch he saw through the left side of the infield.

That would be Pomeranz’s final frame of work, as sophomore left-hander Matt Crouse took the mound to open the sixth inning.

Crouse would last until midway through the seventh when after surrendering a double and single to put runners on the corners he was pulled in favor of right-hander Eric Callender.

Following a Jake Smith sac fly and an error by Yarbrough that allowed David Kindred to reach base, catcher Cody Trotter hit a two-RBI double into the right field corner.

Trotter was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a triple, but the damage had been done as Alabama scored three in the frame to pull within one at 5-4.

Ole Miss closer Brett Huber once again came on in the 8th and closed the door for the Rebels, striking out three in 2.0 innings to earn his 10th save of the season.

Alabama starter Adam Morgan was tagged with the loss for Alabama, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk in 2.0 innings.

Pomeranz earned his seventh win of the season for Ole Miss, allowing one run on one hit and seven walks in 5.0 innings, striking out nine in the process.
