Patterson’s blast lifts Tigers past Rebs

One jarring swing from the 6-foot-4, 233-pound Kevin Patterson proved to be the difference as the No. 16 Auburn Tigers were able to defeat the No. 17 Ole Miss Rebels 5-3 Thursday night at Oxford-University Stadium.

With two runners on and two outs in the eighth inning, Auburn skipper John Pawlowski opted to pinch-hit Patterson in place of designated hitter Tony Caldwell once Ole Miss left-hander Drew Pomeranz was removed from the game.

The move paid off.

Patterson blasted a 1-0 slider from Ole Miss closer Brett Huber down the right field line for his 15th home run of the season to put the Tigers ahead 5-3. (May 21, 2010, Page 6a)
