Alabama tops Rebels to remain in winner’s bracket

HOOVER, Ala. — For the second time this season Alabama starter Nathan Kilcrease has pitched into the ninth in a winning effort against the Rebels.

Day 2: Alabama-Ole Miss Game Blog

HOOVER, Ala. — Live from Regions Park in Hoover, Ala., for Day 2 of the Southeastern Conference’s SEC Tournament. Game 7 pits Ole Miss (37-20 overall) and Alabama (35-21). City: Rework interchange

After working for more than 12 years on a plan to construct a massive interchange to improve the dangerous West Jackson Avenue-Highway 6 intersection, city and state officials said Wednesday it’s time to start over.

At a special meeting held in Batesville, members of the Oxford Board of Aldermen and representatives of the Mississippi Department of Transportation agreed to consider scaling down the project. (May 27, 2010, Page 1, 5)

Talks continue on hospital’s future

A recent meeting between city, county and Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi officials was hailed as a positive meeting of the minds, albeit just one of many needed before the hospital’s future can be determined. (May 27, 2010, Page 1)

OPD makes five arrests in separate burglaries

The Oxford Police Department arrested five people in connection with several local burglaries.
“Our detectives have been working nonstop,” Assistant Chief Joey East said. “We’re really proud of them. It shows their dedication and effort.” (May 27, 2010, Page 5)

  • Mary Margaret Dunn Ashmore — 91, died Monday, May 24, 2010. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley. Burial will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Water Valley. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 this evening at the funeral home.
  • Paul Easton Bruening — 48, died Monday, May 24, 2010. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Waller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
  • Flora Estelle Martin Cole — 91, died Thursday, May 27, 2010. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of Waller Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
  • Kenneth Freeman — 42, died Wednesday, May 19, 2010. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Spring Hill ASA M.B. Church in Courtland. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at Cooley’s Mortuary.
  • Rufus Kenneth Jenkins — 70, died Tuesday . Arrangements are incomplete with Serenity-Martin Funeral Home of Oxford.
  • Clarence Ramsey — 66, died Sunday, May 23, 2010. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Independent M.B. Church in Tyro. Burial will follow in Lewers Chapel Cemetery in Senatobia. Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Sardis is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will be held until 7 this evening at the funeral home.

Great pitching, timely hitting lift Rebs past USC

Drew Pomeranz showed why he was named pitcher of the year as he threw seven shutout innings for Ole Miss in Wednesday’s opener with South Carolina in the Southeastern Conference Baseball Tournament in Hoover, Ala. Reliver Brett Huber finished the game for a save and Miles Hamblin’s two-run homer in the third inning was the big blast in the Rebels’ 3-0 victory.

Ole Miss joined Alabama, LSU and Vanderbilt as opening-day winners in the tournament at Regions Park. The Rebels will play Alabama today at 4:30 p.m. The winner will get Friday off, while the loser will face the Auburn-South Carolina winner in a 3 p.m. contest Friday. (May 27, 2010, Page 6)
