The Lafayette No.1 girl’s duo made it all the way to the MHSAA Class 4A finals before losing to the No. 1 seed from Pontotoc 6-3, 6-1. They had defeated a team from Columbia 6-1, 6-1 in round one and then beat a Newton County team 6-1, 6-3 in the semi-finals to advance to the state title match.
In other matches at the state tennis tournament, Katrina Briscoe and Mallory Davis made it out of the first round at No. 2 girl’s doubles, defeating Shannon 6-7, 6-1, 6-3. They lost to eventual champion New Albany 6-1, 5-7, 6-3.
On the boy’s side, Barron Pruitt and Ethan Delk also won their first round match (6-7, 6-1, 6-2 over Columbia) before losing to Pontotoc 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals.
As a team, the Commodores had a very successful season, earning a district championship and finishing with a 10-4 overall record. Also, three of the team’s losses came against New Albany and Oxford. (May 12, 2010, Page 9)
