SPORTS EDITOR BLOG — Lafayette’s baseball team advanced into the second round of the Class 4A playoffs Friday evening with a 3-1 win over Cleveland at W.V. Brewer Field.
Who the Commodores (16-10 overall) will play in that second round still remains a mystery. Tishomingo County evened its first-round series with Amory on Friday with an 8-3 win. The winner of the third game in the series, which will be played on Monday, weather permitting, will take on the Commodores in the 4A semifinals this next weekend.
LHS advanced to the second round thanks to another strong pitching performance from a starter. Blake Witt earned the victory for LHS by limiting Cleveland to just two hits overall. Witt had a no-hitter going through the first 5.1 innings despite not having his curveball working until the middle of the contest.
The Commodores led the entire game, scoring their first run in the third inning and then plating two more in the fourth on three hits. LHS had seven hits as a team, including two hits apiece from John Jeffrey Nelson and Jarrett Patton. (May 1, 2010)
