Ole Miss starter Aaron Barrett rebounded from a tough start last week at Mississippi State to earn a big 3-2 win over No. 14 Arkansas at Oxford-University Stadium on Saturday.
The junior right-hander pitched a career-long 8.0 innings to pick up his seventh win of the season, allowing one run on six hits and two walks while striking out six.
Matt Smith put the Rebels on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first, slugging his 12th homer of the year over the right field wall. The round-tripper scored Alex Yarbrough, who had hit a double in the previous at-bat.
Ole Miss added to its lead in the second. Center fielder Tim Ferguson scored from third when a ball hit by Smith was thrown away by Arkansas shortstop Tim Carver.
Zack Cox helped Arkansas retaliate in the top of the fourth, hitting the first pitch he saw into the Razorbacks’ bullpen for a solo home run.
Ole Miss closer Brett Huber entered the game in the ninth inning and although he surrendered a solo home run to pinch hitter Tom Hauskey with two outs, he was able to induce a ground out from Travis Sample to end the game.
D.J. Baxendale was tagged with the loss for Arkansas, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks in 1.2 innings of work.
