Ole Miss headed to Charlottesville Regional
Ole Miss will be making its ninth NCAA Tournament appearance in 10 seasons under Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco. Earlier today it was announced on ESPN that the Rebels will be packing their bags and heading to Virginia for the Charlottesville (Va.) Regional as the No. 2 seed. (more…) (May 31, 2010)

- Mary “Gertrude” Jackson James — 85, died Sunday, May 30, 2010, at Graceland Care Center in Oxford. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at New Prospect Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ken White and the Rev. Ross Robertson officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 until 7 p.m. at Waller Funeral Home and on Wednesday from noon until the service time at the church.

- Jimmy L. Arrington — 68, died Friday, May 28, 2010, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Chapel of Waller Funeral Home, with the Rev. Alan Cochet and the Rev. Randy Hope officiating. Burial followed in College Hill Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
- Harvey Orval Haggard — 82, died Thursday, May 27, 2010, at his home near Holly Springs. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church of Holly Springs, with the Rev. Dr. Milton Winter officiating. Inurnment will be in the columbarium at First Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Coleman Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.
- David Wimberly — 41, died at his home in Waterford on Saturday, May 29, 2010. Services will be held a 2 p.m. Monday in the Coleman Funeral Home Chapel in Oxford, with Bro. Blaine Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the Abbeville Cemetery in Abbeville. Visitation will be held Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Day 4: Ole Miss-LSU Game Blog
Hoover, Ala. — On Friday, the Ole Miss Rebels were able to exorcise a few demons with a 10-7 victory over the Auburn Tigers. Today, the LSU Tigers will get the same chance after being swept during the regular season. For the second day in a row rain has pushed back Ole Miss’ game, but as of right now we’re looking at an 11 a.m. start time. Former LHS football coach dies Friday

Day 3: Auburn-Ole Miss Game Blog
HOOVER, Ala. — Ole Miss’ Zach Miller said on Monday he wanted the chance to play the Auburn Tigers at Regions Park during the Southeastern Conference. He’ll get his wish today. Lafayette County’s unemployment rate dips again
In the first four months of 2010, Lafayette County’s unemployment rate has dropped from 10.3 percent in January to 8.2 percent in April, according to a new jobs report. (May 28, 2010, Page 5A)
Officers patrol Square with four-legged partners
While the Square is no stranger to dogs and their owners during the day, another breed of four-legged friends have been sharing the sidewalks and streets with the usual nighttime crowds.
Oxford Police Department’s Mounted Patrol has been out and about the Square since being approved by the Oxford Board of Aldermen earlier this year. (May 28, 2010, Page 1B)
Yankees plunder Oxford
Gen. Ulysses S. Grant learned that his army could live off the land when he attempted his first capture in 1862 of the Gibraltar of the South in Vicksburg, after the Battle of Shiloh. This was significant for the citizens of Oxford and Lafayette County. His troops would plunder the homes and farms around Oxford for not only food supplies but also for personal items.
