Tennessee earns first SEC win, beats OM 5-2

The Tennessee Volunteers are winless in the SEC no more. Led by senior right-hander Stephen McCray and powerful leadoff hitter P.J. Polk, the Volunteers downed the No. 11 Ole Miss Rebels 5-2 on Saturday at Oxford-University Stadium.

Polk proved to be an offensive force for the Vols, going 4-for-5 with two home runs and three RBIs, and while McCray was wild during parts of the 7.0 innings he pitched — he walked five and hit three batters — he was able to strand Rebel base runners to hold Tennessee’s lead.

Ole Miss starter Aaron Barrett was tagged with the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) in 6.2 innings of work. Barrett also struck out seven batters.

The loss is Ole Miss’ first Saturday loss of the season.

The two teams will conclude their three-game series at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. The game will be televised on SportsSouth. (April 3, 2010)
