Rebels win slug-fest in Game 1 vs. LSU

Game 1 of the Ole Miss-LSU baseball series had been billed as the must-see pitching matchup of the year. What it turned out to be, however, was a slug-fest.

Ole Miss was able to collect four home runs en route to an 11-9 victory over the No. 6 Tigers in at Oxford-University Stadium on Saturday.Neither LSU right-hander Anthony Ranaudo, nor Ole Miss left-hander Drew Pomeranz pitched as expected in Game 1, as both aces did not make it past the fourth inning.

Ranaudo, who was saddled with his first loss of the season, lasted just 1.2 innings, allowing nine runs on nine hits and one walk.

Pomeranz had his shortest outing of the season for Ole Miss, allowing five runs (four earned) in 3.0 innings, walking a season-high nine walks while striking out just three.

After falling behind 2-0, Ole Miss took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the first courtesy of a two-run homer by Miles Hamblin and a solo shot by Matt Snyder.

Ole Miss pushed its lead to 9-2 in the next frame, plating six more runs on five hits, one walk and a hit-by-pitch.

In the second, Snyder tallied his second home run off of Ranaudo, and fourth in five at-bats, swatting the right-hander’s pitch over the center field wall for a grand slam to put Ole Miss ahead 8-2.

Both teams would trade runs from there on out, but the Rebels were able to add insurance runs in the sixth and eighth on a Tim Ferguson solo home run and an RBI-single by Snyder, to hold on to the victory.

Rory McKean picked up the win for Ole Miss, allowing three runs on five hits in 3.0 innings in relief.

Brett Huber earned his fifth save of the season by inducing a ground out and two strikeouts looking in the ninth.

Game 2 is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start. (April 24, 2010)
