SPORTS EDITOR BLOG — A great showing in the Senior Bowl earlier this year turned out to be very beneficial for Ole Miss offensive guard John Jerry Friday night in the NFL Draft.
Jerry was selected in the third round of the draft by the Miami Dolphins, making him the second Rebel of the day to be drafted. Running back/wide receiver Dexter McCluster was selected in the second round by the Kansas City Chiefs earlier on Friday.
The 6-foot-5, 335-pound Jerry was instructed by Miami coach Tony Sparano and his staff during the annual Senior Bowl game in Mobile, Ala., and according to reports from the Miami media, Sparano really liked Jerry and his ability to play both guard and tackle in the future.
“I feel like I can play either one,” Jerry to the Miami Herald. “I have experience at both so I feel I can play either one.”
Drafting Jerry, who started 46 games during his career at Ole Miss, also allows the Dolphins to continue to work on a trade involving former Alabama lineman Justin Smiley, who was a starter at guard last season. (April 23, 2010)
