Learn to tap dance
The Yoknapatawpha Arts Council and Leda Swan Inc. present free tap dance classes Wednesday evenings through May 26 at the Powerhouse Community Arts Center. The classes are open to all ages with no experience (or tap shoes) required. (April 30, 2010)
Community Bike Ride
May is Bike Month! Join members of the Oxford Cycling Club each Sunday at 6 p.m. for a casual, conversational ride around Oxford.
The group will ride for up to an hour on the new bike paths and quiet streets on campus and in town. Riders of all skill levels are welcome. (April 30, 2010)
Taylorpalooza 2010
The Yoknapatawpha Arts Council hosts its annual membership picnic Saturday, May 8, from 5-8 p.m. at Plein Air Green in Taylor. Featuring music by The Cakewalkers and Jake Fussell and Jamison Hollister, with food and fun for the whole family. The event is free to YAC members and non-members are invited to join the arts council. (April 30, 2010)
Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars Concert
Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars started playing music together in West African refugee camps while their homeland was racked by years of bloody warfare. Since then, in electrifying live performances and recording experience with the likes of Aerosmith and Mavis Staples, the All Stars have been “establishing an identity based as much on skill, imagination and charisma as on their undeniably touching story” (The Los Angeles Times).
This spring, on the heels of their new album, Rise & Shine (Cumbancha, March 23), the group will perform in Oxford at Proud Larry’s on Monday, May 3. (April 30, 2010)

2010 OHS Athletic Recognition Program
This year’s OHS Athletic Recognition Program sponsored by the Oxford Charger Athletic Booster Club will be Tuesday, May 4, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Kayla Mize Auditorium at Oxford High School. All parents of varsity athletes are invited to attend the program with a reception to follow in the OHS Commons. The format of this year’s program has changed from previous years: No tickets will be necesarry to attend the program, and no meal will be served. (April 30, 2010)
