Oxford’s tennis team got pushed for the first time in several matches Monday in a 5-2 win over Pontotoc.
The Chargers head into today’s district match at home against New Hope having actually worked up a bit of a sweat to earn yet another win.
Pontotoc won a girls doubles match and boys doubles match but couldn’t do anything else against the Chargers, who improved to 9-0 on the year.
Jenner Jordan won his boys singles match, 6-0, 6-0, over Jacob Hester, while Mary Bryan Barksdale beat Elizabeth Chrestman 6-2, 6-3 in girls singles.
At No. 1 boys doubles, Zach Wilder and Will Huntington defeated Stephen Montgomery and Alex Bleu 6-3, 6-0.
At No. 1 girls doubles, Sterling Davis and Virginia Terry topped Frankie Turner and Katherine Downing 6-7 (5-7), 6-5 (10-5).
Rounding out the wins for Oxford were the mixed doubles team of Alex Mullen and Felicity Flesher, who beat Anna Chrestman and Deaton McAuley 6-0, 6-1.
Cameron Tommons and Ryan Henry beat Oxford’s Thien Che and Reid Heckel 5-7, 6-2 (10-6) in a tiebreaker match, while Haylee Walker and Lauren Howell beat Erin Dyer and Emilee Smith 6-3, 6-4.
Oxford also won five JV doubles matches Monday.
The girls doubles team of Ann Marie Edlin and Cari Hansen topped Anna Way and Ivy Robbins 6-3, 6-1, Kara Rose and Embrey Inman defeated Anna Rosenburn and Lauren Clayton 6-3, 6-4, while Lynley-Love Jones and Katie Krouse dispatched Ali Warren and Shannon Montgomery 6-4, 6-3.
In boys doubles, Baxter Elliott and Robert Nance defeated Braden Timmons and Jacob Ferguson 6-0, 6-2, while Arlis Williams and Quinn Elliott topped Austin Anderson and Pervcen Burchfield 6-2, 6-1. (April 6, 2010, Page 9)
