OHS competes at Class 5A powerlifting meet

Led by a second-place finish from DeAndre Patrick, the Oxford girls and boys powerlifting teams had a solid showing in the recent Class 5A meet held in Jackson. Patrick received a silver medal for recording a 1,470. Ann Crabtree, Darius Montgomery and DeMarcus Brown all finished third in their respective weight classes to earn a bronze medal. Crabtree totaled a 510, Montgomery a 630 and Brown a 730. Tonya Toles, Urika Williams and Nikki Griliette finished fourth. Toles totaled a 575, Williams totaled a 670 and Grilliette a 745. Dondre Gatlin finished fifth place with an 885, while Jon O. Fisher finished in sixth place in his weight class after totaling a 1,225.

“We had a good year as a team and I was proud of how they the athletes lifted at the state meet,” OHS coach Jason Russell said. “I thought we showed a lot of progress over the year and how we got better. I think this sets us up to be a good team next season.” (April 21, 2010, Page 9)
