Notes…of Note:
ALL IN THE FAMILY: UGA freshman SS Kyle Farmer has several Ole Miss ties. His father, Bryan Farmer, was an All-SEC pitcher for Ole Miss from 1982-’86 and his uncle, Joe Gex, played for the Rebels from 1984-’87.
NOT YOUR ORDINARY CONE: UGA sophomore centerfielder Zach Cone has been a force for the Bulldogs on offense with a .371 batting average, six home runs and a team-high 28 RBIs. He is also 6-for-6 in stolen base attempts. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound outfielder from Stone Mountain, Ga., opted to play in Athens, Ga., after he graduated from Parkview High rather than sign with the Los Angeles Angels, who took in 112th overall in the 2008 draft.
NEW TO THE FIELD: Ole Miss junior Matt Tracy will be making his second start of the season in left field. His first came in the Rebels’ 9-6 loss to Arkansas-Little Rock on Wednesday at Oxford-University Stadium.
GOING FOR NO. 300: Georgia skipper David Perno will be going for win No. 300 tonight against the Rebels. Perno, in his ninth season with Georgia, is currently 299-227-1. Should the Bulldogs pick up a win this weekend, he will join Jim Whatley (336-327-3 from 1950, ’52-75) and Steve Webber (500-403-1 from 1981-1996). By comparison, Ole Miss has three skippers in the 300-club: Tom Swayze (361-201-2 from ’51-71), Jake Gibbs (485-389-8 from ’72-90) and Mike Bianco (386-212-1 from ’01-present). Bianco is 13-10 all-time against Georgia, while Perno is 9-11 against Ole Miss.
NO STRANGER: UGA RHP Justin Grimm is no stranger to the Rebels. Last year, Grimm picked up the win in Georgia’s 6-3 victory over then-No. 7 Ole Miss in the first round of the 2009 SEC Tournament in Hoover, Ala., Grimm allowed two runs on eight hits and two walks in 5.1 innings while also striking out three.
