SPORTS EDITOR BLOG — A violation of team rules over the weekend has cost the Lafayette baseball team three starters for the remainder of the season.
Senior pitcher Matt Taylor, senior outfielder Denzel Goolsby and junior outfielder Ontario Phillips were dismissed from the team by coach Greg Lewis on Tuesday. Taylor and Goolsby both played Saturday afternoon against Water Valley, while Phillips was held out the annual game with the Blue Devils due to an injury.
Taylor, a right-handed pitcher and infielder, was 2-3 on the season and the team’s No. 1 starter. He exits the team after hitting .271 with four RBIs, two doubles, a triple and six stolen bases. Goolsby was one of the team’s top power threats. He was hitting .322 with three home runs and 15 RBIs so far this year and was 8-for-8 on stolen base attempts. Phillips, who was just about to return to the lineup, was leading the team with a .354 average, two doubles, a triple and eight RBIs so far this year. (April 14, 2010)
