SPORTS EDITOR BLOG — There were a couple of games I had to pull out of my article involving Water Valley and Lafayette in today’s paper. So in the attempt to get that information in somewhere, I have included all the details here in the blog.
A late rally by the Patriots proved to be the difference in this close district game. LHS had 11 hits as a team in the loss and was ahead 5-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh when Lewisburg scored two runs to win the game. Blake Witt took the loss for LHS in relief of Jarrett Patton, who logged the first four innings.
Lewis talked about some missed scoring opportunities in the loss. LHS had the bases loaded with only one out in third and failed to score while a leadoff triple with no outs in the fourth also didn’t produce a run.
LHS did have productive fifth and sixth innings on the scoreboard. Denzel Goolsby drove in Luke McCullough with a double in the fifth, while Aaron Cullen drove in Goolsby with a double in the frame. McCullough then drove in a run in the sixth with a single, as did Stanley, while the final run for LHS was scored on a wild pitch.
Lewisburg scored one run in the third, three in the fourth and two in the seventh, with the game-winning run being driven in on a sacrifice fly.
The Blue Devils improved to 5-1 in district play with a 4-1 win over Winona on the road. WVHS trailed 1-0 until it scored three runs in the fourth to go ahead for good. The team had seven hits, with Walt McCullough and Chris Conard leading the way three and two respectively. Josh Johnson started and got the win, while Shonquayle Jenkins came on to earn the save. The duo combined to strike out 14 overall. (April 12, 2010)
