LES students learn about environment
Lafayette Elementary School students had a chance to learn about being “green” during a fun hour of activities outside their school Friday. OHS honored at MSPA
Oxford High School Charger newspaper student editor Cathy Chen took home the Editor of the Year award and OHS Principal Bill Hovious was named the Administrator of the Year at this year’s Mississippi Scholastic Press Association Awards. - English instructor Morgan Cutturini of Oxford participated in the Itawamba Community College’s 23rd annual Higher Education Appreciation Day Working for Academic Excellence held recently.
- Adrian Young was named the Mary Cathey Head Start Center employee of the month.
- Eight Lafayette FFA students competed March 12 at the North District FFA Competition held at the Oxford/Lafayette Applied Technology Center.
- Bradley Shields of Oxford is spending the spring semester in Florence, Italy.
- Ole Miss is offering a reading camp to fourth- through sixth-graders in June.
- Monday will be Mississippi Clarinet Day at the University of Mississippi.

SPORTS EDITOR’S BLOG — Just arrived in New York about an hour ago with EAGLE photographer Bruce Newman. Ready to see the city a bit and then head over to Madison Square Garden for tonight’s NIT Final Four game between the Ole Miss Rebels and Dayton Flyers. Our hotel is only a block and a half away, so even if it keeps raining, Bruce and I shouldn’t get too wet.

Kenneth K. Gowen Jr. — 85, died Monday, March 29, 2010. Funeral services will be Thursday at noon at First Baptist Church in Oxford. Burial will follow in Eastover Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4. until 7 p.m. at Waller Funeral Home and again, preceding the service, from 11 a.m. until noon at the church.
Cassanda Faulkner Potts — 33, died Saturday, March 27, 2010. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Tutor Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Pontotoc. Burial will follow in the North Oxford Baptist Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 this evening and from noon to service time Wednesday at the funeral home.
Betty Ruth Swearengen — 70, died Sunday, March 28, 2010. Visitation will be from 5 until 7 this evening at Seven Oaks Funeral Home. Services are planned for Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery in Water Valley. (March 30, 2010, Page 2)
Rebels to face Dayton tonight in NIT semis
NEW YORK — Two wins is all that separates the Ole Miss Rebels from their first National Invitation Tournament title. But in order for the Rebels to claim that prestigious prize, they will have to defeat the Dayton Flyers tonight and then either history-rich North Carolina or Rhode Island on Thursday night.
Tipoff between the Rebels (24-10 overall) and the Flyers (23-12) is set for 6 tonight. The game can be seen locally on ESPN2 (Metrocast Channel 34) with Ron Franklin handling the play-by-play and Fran Fraschilla and Bill Raftery handling the color analysis. Tonight’s game can also be heard on 93.7 FM with Eli Savoie and Keith Carter calling the action. (March 30, 2010, Page 8)
