McFarland named Gatorade POY

Ole Miss women’s hoops signee and Raymond High standout Valencia McFarland was named Mississippi’s Gatorade Player of the Year today.
This season, the 5-foot-4 senior point guard helped lead the Raymond Lady Rangers (30-1 overall) to the Class 4A title, defeating New Albany and Lafayette in the process. McFarland averaged 17.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game this season. She is also a two-time member of the Clarion Ledger’s Dandy Dozen team and is considered the No. 38 recruit in the nation by ESPN Hoopgurlz.

“Valencia McFarland is an incredible individual and an amazing basketball player,” Raymond coach Shay Jackson said in a release. “She is such a hard-working athlete and a complete joy to coach. She is truly a program changer.”

McFarland also excelled in the classroom, where she maintained a 3.76 GPA.
