Matt Tracy quotes

Here’s some extra post-game quotes from Tuesday’s 14-4 Ole Miss win over Austin Peay concerning pitcher (turned slugger?) Matt Tracy
Against the Govs on Tuesday, Tracy went 2-for-4 with a home run and a double.

On lineup switch with Tracy

It seems like Tracy is one of our best hitters. Unfortunately for him there are a lot of good left-handed guys. That was no joke or gift, he’s a real guy. He takes batting practice every day.

How’d it come about?
He asked over the summer and we said sure, we’ll give you a shot. Because of the numbers, the 35 (roster spots), you don’t have the amount of hitters. Maybe if it was five years ago it would have been tougher to give a guy like that an opportunity because you have so many guys out there, but he’s looked terrific. It’s kind of amazing because he looked real good from day one. He’s looked good against the good pitchers. They talk about how he owns (David) Goforth. Its one thing for guys to be good high school hitters, but they get here and the ball beats them a lot with the velocity because they just can’t keep up with it. That’s not the case with him. He has a great swing, is very short to the ball, can hit to all fields. He certainly showed tonight that he should be in the mix.

I’m starting to feel more comfortable against live pitching.

How’d it come about?
I hit a little bit over the summer and then I came here and started taking batting practice the first couple of weeks during 4-on-1s and hit pretty well and started hitting during the intrasquads.

Something petitioning coach?
I kind of wanted to do it my freshman year. I’ve always wanted to do it and get back out there because it’s a lot of fun.

On the HR:
It felt awesome. I haven’t done that since high school, so I didn’t even know what it was like running around the bases. (March 10, 2010)
